Week 13 Story: Jack and Jill

Jack and Jill have been friends for as long as they could remember. They used to be little kids playing outside together every day. They are all grown up now though. Jack and Jill started dating when they were teenagers. They are now in their mid-twenties and more in love than ever. They still play outside together but have adult responsibilities now, like keeping up with gardening, which Jack enjoys doing in his spare time.

It was a sunny afternoon, perfect for a day of gardening. It was late spring and Jack’s garden was starting to sprout up. He thought to himself, “man, I really need to water my plants before it gets too hot out.” Jack had just gotten off work and was exhausted. Jill was coming over soon to have dinner with him. Jack decided that he would ask Jill to help him get some water for his plants because there was no way he can do it himself that day. The waterspout sits at the top of a hill in Jack’s backyard so it can be a long haul to do alone.

Jill arrived for dinner at Jack’s. Jack greeted Jill and told her he had something for her, but it was at the top of the hill. Jill says, “Oh Jack, you are the sweetest!’, thinking that Jack had actually gotten her a gift. Little did she know she was going to have to carry a heavy bucket of water down a huge hill. Jack tells Jill, “No, you are the sweetest for this.” They headed outside to go on their journey up the hill.

Jack and Jill get to the top of the hill. Jill starts looking around and sees nothing besides a water spicket. She had not been up here before but knew it was where Jack had to go to get water for his garden. She looks at Jill and asked, “So where is my surprise?’ Jack looked at her and giggle because he knew he was about to shock her with what he was asking. He told her, “Silly Jill, I just needed help carrying my water buckets to my garden.” Jill was mad now. She could not believe she fell for this. She grabbed a bucket and filled it up without saying anything.

They had both of the buckets filled and are helping one another carry each. Jack told Jill she was the best girlfriend ever for doing this. He had no idea that Jill had a different idea than him in her head. Jill thought to herself, “I am about to trip the boy down the hill.” They began walking down the hill and Jill stuck her leg out in front of Jack. Before she realizes what she had done, Jack fell down and Jill came stumbling after.

Authors Note: I got this idea from the nursery rhyme, "Jack and Jill". I thought it would be a cool idea to take the very short rhyme and turn it into a story. I thought it would be humorous to tell the real story of how Jack and Jill came stumbling down. I did leave out that Jack broke his crown because it is not super realistic for a boy to have a crown on after getting off work.

  1. Hi Ashten! What a fun idea, taking a snippet from a nursery rhyme and turning it into a fuller narrative! And the idea of Jack the Gardener is really amusing, I wonder what inspired this addition to the story? Did it come from the original rhyme at all? Perhaps you could let us know in your author's note what elements you added and what was inspired by the original!
Anyway, I really enjoyed this story as it was quite playful and light, just like a nursery rhyme ought to be but in story form. Well done!
